Trapper Jack’s Winter Survival Video

Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath actually kept me offline not because the storm effected me but because I know people in the area who needed constant hand holding and advice. Sad that we’ve come to the point as a society where people were “starving” less then 24 hours after the power went out. Anyway, I’ll be posting more stuff focusing on emergency survival, preserving food, foraging and other topics people who get hit by a bad storm (actual or otherwise) will be able to use.

Trapper Jack is a YouTuber I watch a lot. I think he’s in North Carolina but frankly I’ve heard he’s one of the last of the old school hobos, though how he uploads videos while wondering the earth with no where to call home is beyond me. This is an hour though of watching how someone who starts out with nothing survives a harsh winter – well to do New Yorkers take note:

Hornady 2013 Line Up Video

Via Guns.com which has a selection of clips, but the full video introducing Hornady’s 2013 new product line up is worth every minute of your time. Odd caliber aficionados like myself will be thrilled to see a new .32 H&R Mag loading perfect for those snub nosed .327s we all have tucked away in a dest drawer. And of course .410 shotgunners have one more reason to thank the much maligned Taurus Judge owners as yet another .410 self-defense round will be out. Designed for the Judge I’m interested to see how it performs out of my NEF Survivor.

The way guns and ammo are selling I’d suggest you put in pre-orders with your local shop if possible. Enjoy;

Wild Boar Mauls Four in Berlin!

Like in many countries increased urbanization has led to decreased hunting pressure on dangerous game in Germany, with the consequences becoming obvious:

Berlin authorities say they shot and killed a 120 kilogram (265-pound) wild boar after it attacked and injured four people including a police officer in a residential neighborhood.

Police said Tuesday the boar bit a 74-year-old man on the back and leg, and knocked a 74-year-old woman to the ground and injured her hip on Monday afternoon in the Charlottenburg area of the capital. It also bit a 24-year-old woman before she climbed aboard a parked car to safety. All three were treated in a hospital.

Police say when a police officer arrived, the boar attacked him and cut his leg before he pulled his gun and killed the animal with “multiple shots.”

Wild boars are relatively common in green Berlin, though rarely cause problems beyond digging up gardens.

Frankly digging up gardens is a significant problem especially considering the terrible growing seasons the world has had these last few years. But as boar lose their fear of humans there will be more aggressive interactions between man and very large beast.

700 Tons of Gold Ore Disappear off Russia’s Pacific Coast

Calling all treasure hunters!

MOSCOW – A vessel with a nine-person crew and 700 tons of gold ore onboard has disappeared in stormy seas off Russia’s Pacific Coast.

The ship sent a distress call on Sunday as it was sailing from the coastal town of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk.

The vessel, hired by mining company Polymetal, was carrying 700 tons of gold ore from one deposit to another where it was to be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small percentage of the precious metal.

Polymetal’s spokesman on Monday would not estimate the value of the cargo.

The company said it has shipped ore via that route before, and there was nothing unusual in shipping it by the sea.

You treasure seekers with stars in your eyes should remember that Russia is not exactly amenable to fortune hunters. But it is tempting to book a ship and head out there, isn’t it?

80,000 Pounds of Walnuts Hijacked from California Freight Company!

When I ran a crime blog I remember covering some large scale meat and produce thefts a couple of years into the Great Recession. This is the first time I’ve heard of walnuts being targeted but it makes sense. Walnuts can be stored much longer than most food products being transported giving the thieves plenty of time to off load the goods in small quantities so as not to arouse the suspicions of local authorities.

The haul is valued at around $300,000:

Authorities are investigating two thefts of more than 80,000 pounds of walnuts from Northern California valued at about $300,000.

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a freight brokerage firm on Friday reporting that a 40,000-pound truckload of walnuts never arrived in Miami as they were supposed to.

Authorities believe the culprit is the same person who also picked up another load of walnuts (each load weighing 40,000 pounds) days earlier from Los Molinos. Those walnuts were intended for Texas, but also disappeared.

Deputies tell the Record Searchlight of Redding the man who picked those walnuts up was not the person hired for the job. They have not identified the suspect although they do have a suspect description.

I assume the description includes details like “a bushy tail” and “beady eyes.”
