Around the Campfire – It’s a Weird Wild World Link Round Up

This is my favorite time of year for a good old fashioned woods ramble or long walk through an unfamiliar place because you never know what you might find lurking in the shadows a few weeks before Halloween:

A fisherman in Texas found a giant tooth that might be from an American Mastadon in the San Antonio river. The drought caused the waters to be unusually low so who knows what other treasures will be unearthed?

A Florida beachcomber found a giant eye lying on the beach. It has yet to be identified but it may be from a giant squid. Reports are it was still “fresh” and bleeding when it was found.

“Hardcore Outdoorsman” finds Bigfoot track while in a “secluded camp” in Texas.

Mystery boom rattles NJ community.

A teen in Virginia was pelted with chicken parts while riding a horse near a Tyson chicken plant. The prevailing theory is that scavenging birds like seagulls are stealing raw parts from the factory and being messy with their food.

New Yorkers are shocked to discover that raccoons are aggressive and dangerous. The population is breeding fast there.

Other metro areas are having problems with coyotes, bears and mountain lions. Urban types are very confused as to why there’s an increase in the population of animals not being hunted.

The 1972 murder of Jeannette DePalma in an abandoned New Jersey quarry has never been solved but locals are still afraid to talk about the case. Allegations of a police cover up and a satanic cult in the woods around Springfield might strike the fancy of intrepid investigators.

Yeti Sightings on the Rise in Russia

Anyone who’s been outdoors has a story of seeing something odd when they’re alone. Russian outdoorsman are no different, they’re just drunker:

A group of yetis are on the loose in Sibera, fishermen and a forestry worker have claimed.
There were three reported sightings in recent weeks.

One person who reported spying the beast said “We shouted, ‘Do you need help?’ They rushed away, all in fur, walking on two legs, making their way through the bushes and with two other limbs, straight up the hill.

The person who made the report added: “It could not be bears, as the bear walks on all fours, and they ran on two. Then they were gone.”

On a second sighting on the bank of the Mras-Su River several days later, an unnamed fisherman was quoted as saying: “We saw some tall animals looking like people.”

He added: “Our binoculars were broken and did not let us see them sharply. We waved at the animals but they did not respond, then quickly ran back into the forest, walking on two legs.

“We realized that they were not in dark clothes but covered by dark fur. They did walk like people.”

And in a third sighting a forestry inspector reported seeing a yeti in a national park, a government official said.
Sergei Adlyakov said: “The creature did not look like a bear and quickly disappeared after breaking some branches off the bushes.”

Russia’s leading yeti expert Igor Burtsev, head of the International Center of Hominology, claimed sightings were ’significant’.

At a similar expedition last year, he claimed to have found yeti hair though no DNA findings have been released.
He claims the creature — also known as bigfoot and Sasquatch — is the missing link between Neanderthal man and modern human beings.

Significant, sure. Be careful out there comrade.

Cajun Sexy Cooking Crawfish Party!

Any man who loves the outdoors loves Dana Holyfield who has spent the last few years putting out irreverent, down home cook books and videos featuring beautiful women camping,  cooking and chowin’ down in the swampland. When she’s not tracking down the Honey Island Swamp Monster that is.

This is a new trailer for one of her many Sexy Cajun Cooking projects which are all available on Amazon or through her website. Let’s be honest – when we invite our wives and girlfriends along with us on camping and hunting trips this is pretty much what we want it to look like.

Oregon Rancher Eaten by Hogs!

Tragic and horrible story but I am posting it because just recently someone I know told me that being worried about animals attacking people is paranoia. These were tame, farm raised pigs, imagine what feral pigs will do to a person:

COOS BAY, OR (KPTV) – An Oregon man trying to feed his 700-pound hogs was eaten by the animals Thursday, and sheriff’s deputies are trying to determine what led up to his death.

Terry Garner, who lived near the rural town of Riverton in southern Oregon, went to feed the animals on his farm at 7:30 a.m.

When he wasn’t seen for several hours, a family member went to look for him, and found Garner’s dentures on the ground in front of the hog enclosure, which housed several of the animals.

While searching the hog enclosure, the family member found Garner’s body in several pieces, with a majority of it consumed by the hogs, the district attorney said.

Now deputies are investigating how Garner ended up in a position where the hogs were able to eat him.

District Attorney Paul Frasier said there are a number of possible scenarios, including one in which Garner suffered a heart attack. Another possible scenario is that given Garner’s age and health, the hogs were able to knock him down and kill him. Frasier said there have been reports that at least one of the hogs had been aggressive toward Garner in the past.

Police haven’t ruled out foul play but since one of the hogs attacked the man before we all know how this will end.

Animals are dangerous. Even those cute pigs we all eat on burgers can kill a man.

Firebox Portable Campfire Review

This looks like a larger, fancier version of the old Pocket Cooker concept available through outfits like Backwoodsman Mercantile. The design is different but the theory is the same – a folding stove designed in such a way that any fuel can be used to cook with. The Firebox comes with more features and seems to be a bit more versatile in that it could be used as a small brazier to warm up a lean to if you didn’t want to build a campfire but the Pocket Cooker only costs $20. The Firebox with all the foofarraw is running you a close to $100.  If you can afford it it looks interesting, if you’re a poor ol’ woodsbum stick with a flint and steel ( and a bic!)leave time to build a proper campfire.

For the survivalist this might be a good buy because using sterno cans you can use this indoors during power outages. I have a folding sterno stove I use for emergencies but if I was looking to replace all my cooking gear with one piece this might be it. Full disclosure I have never actually used one someone sent me this review of it by YouTube prepper celeb SouthernPrepper and I then researched it a little.

Like I said if I wanted to replace all my gear I’d look into it – but I’m not looking to so there you go. But if you’re a backpacker or prepper putting together a bug out bag this might be a good product to look into.
