Wind Turbines Kill Over 10,000 Bats a Year in Pennsylvania!

Bat are of course one of nature’s most valuable predators, eating millions of disease carrying and crop destroying insects each and every night. But to the green movement they are just acceptable losses to the cause of saving the earth! Even though the earth will be decimated by these losses.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Last June, the Los Angeles Times reported that about 70 golden eagles are being killed per year by the wind turbines at Altamont Pass, about 20 miles east of Oakland, Calif. A 2008 study funded by the Alameda County Community Development Agency estimated that about 2,400 raptors, including burrowing owls, American kestrels, and red-tailed hawks—as well as about 7,500 other birds, nearly all of which are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act—are being killed every year by the turbines at Altamont.

…Bats are getting whacked, too. The Pennsylvania Game Commission estimates that wind turbines killed more than 10,000 bats in the state in 2010.

Nice going greens! Hey, it’s better than oil right? It’s not like a sudden drop in insectivores and other predators will have consequences to the farms you rely on to grow your food, right?

And as fun as she is at parties I can pretty much guarantee you she won’t be keeping the disease carrying mosquito population under control.

Wind turbines are popping up all over so pay attention to your area. If they are by you you’re going to need to invest in deet and set aside money for malaria treatment.
